Maurice L. Hughes VIRGINIA BEACH Maurice L. Hughes died Sept. 11, 2005. He was born in Norfolk May 18, 1927, to the late Milton E. Hughes and Estelle T. Hughes. He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1947. He attended West Virginia State University. He was a former member of the Men’s Usher Board of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Eastern Light No. 4 ,PHA, Adah Chapter No. 20, past associate patron Order of the Eastern Star, PHA, the Sons of Norfolk and the IBPO Elks Greater Eureka Lodge No. 5. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sarah D. Hughes; a son, Lionel S. Hughes; two daughters, Clarice H. Smith and Winifred H. Jones; a brother, Milton D. Hughes; two grandsons; six granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; godson, Brian W. Baker; a host of nieces and nephews; devoted friends, Vincent and Christine Newby and the Gwendolyn Spencer family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Clara B. Hughes; a son, Myron C. Hughes; a brother, Elwood T. Hughes; and a sister, Estelle H. Young. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Cedric Kirkland-Harris, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Hughes will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday. Viewing will be held today from 3 to 9 p.m. in Chatman/E.A. Hughes Funeral Home, 406 S. Main St., Norfolk.
