Catherine Pestorius Hughes, 100, passed away peacefully with family beside her on 
Monday, August 23, 2021. Mrs. Hughes, who liked to be called Cathy by her friends 
and Sis by her family, was born to Blanche Fantone Winter Pestorius and George 
Pestorius in St. Louis, Missouri; soon thereafter she became a lifelong resident 
of the Norfolk and Virginia Beach area. (The family name was also spelled 
Pistorius.)

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Jack William Hughes, 
who passed away in 2004. She was the sister of the Mary Winter Johnson, John Edgar 
Winter, Ida Winter Demma, Claudia Winter Sams, and Frances Pistorius Woodard, all 
who preceded her in their passing.

Catherine was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy and a retiree of the U.S. 
Government.

A devoted Catholic, she was a parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Catholic 
Church.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 8th at St. 
Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, VA. Interment will follow at 
St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Catherine's name may be sent to St. 
Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 4345 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 
23462. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
