Virginian Pilot September 19, 1953
Mrs. Nellie Mae Hughes, 54, of 555 Langley Boulevard, died Thursday at 10 p.m. 
in a Portsmouth hospital.
She was the wife of Robert W. Hughes and the daughter of Mrs. Clara Virginia 
Whitehurst and the late John L. Whitehurst.
She was a native of Norfolk and resided here a few months.
Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Hughes, is survived by a daughter, Mrs. 
William Peoples, of Norfolk; five sisters, Mrs. R.W. Elam, Mrs. E. Hanley and 
Mrs. P. Edwards, all of Norfolk, and Mrs. L.H. Atkinson and Mrs. H.R. Keel, of 
Portsmouth, and a brother, George Whitehurst , of Norfolk.
The body was taken to the Sturtevant Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 
held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Norfolk. Burial will 
be in Elmwood Cemetery.
