He was a native of Washington, D.C., but had been a resident of Norfolk for twenty years. He was engaged in the hardware business for several years and took quite an active part in civic and political affairs of the city. He was of a jovial disposition and had many friends. He was a member of Norfolk lodge, No. 38, B. P. O. Elks. He is survived by his widow, four sisters, Mrs. Mahan, of Baltimore, Mrs. John White, Misses Mary and Elizabeth Hughes of Washington, D.C., and two brothers, William and Harry Hughes of Washington. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the residence, Dresden apartments, Redgate and Colley avenues, and will be conducted by Rev. John J. Doherty, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic church. Interment will be made in St. Mary’s Cemetery and will be private.
