A loving brother and devoted son, Joe was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 29, 1950. He was a graduate of Norfolk Academy '69 and the University of Virginia '73, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Following college, he worked for First and Merchants Bank in Richmond. This was followed by a position as a commodities Research Analyst with Merrill Lynch in New York City. Joe then moved to Redondo Beach, California, as a Registered Representative with Merrill Lynch, a position he held for 18 years. He returned to Virginia Beach as a financial services representative, most recently for Southern Investment Services. Joe was a member of the Norfolk German Club. Joe was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Tazewell Hume, formerly of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He is survived by his father, Joseph Stuart Hume, brothers William Bradford Hume, John Hamilton Hume, wife Anita and sisters Jean Hume Taliaferro, husband Kem, Dorie Hume Fuller, husband Webb and Isabel Claiborne Hume. In addition, he is survived by nine nieces and nephews: Carol Hume Bokinsky, husband Eric, Linda and Anne Hume, Stuart and Christian Taliaferro, and Myers, Taz and Cordelia Fuller. He is also survived by his aunt and uncle, Cordelia Tazewell Baldwin and William Barton Baldwin. Joe will long be remembered for his kind and gentle nature. He loved his many trips to the Outer Banks with family and friends and he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Joe was a devoted fan of college football, especially his alma mater, UVA. The enormous void left in our hearts will be filled by memories of his love and generosity. He will be missed dearly. A burial service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2012, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any Virginia Beach Rescue Squad in his honor.
