Stu, as he was known, was a loving husband and devoted father. Born in Norfolk, Va. on March 21, 1925, he was a graduate of Maury High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia. During World War II, he served as a Navy Fighter Pilot. Stu was a stockbroker, manager, and resident vice-president of the Norfolk office of Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith. He served on the Board of Directors of the Norfolk Community Hospital and was Chairman of the Board for the Bonnie Home for Girls. He was the driving force that established and managed the Bluebird Little League in West Ghent. Stu was an avid hunter and fisherman and owned a major interest in the Sandbridge Gun Club and the Whalehead Club in Corolla, N.C. He was a Board member of the Isaac Walton League and Chairman of the Southeast region of Virginia Ducks Unlimited. He was also a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, the Norfolk Boat Club, the Norfolk German Club, and the Bond Club of Virginia. Stu is predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy Tazewell Hume, his son Joseph Stuart Hume Jr., parents Dr. Joseph Stuart Hume and Isabel Hume Bryant, sister Jean Hume Hamill, and husband Hunt Hamill, of Winnetka, Ill. He is survived by his children, William Bradford Hume, John Hamilton Hume, wife Anita, Jean Hume Taliaferro, husband Kem, Dorie Hume Fuller, husband Webb, and Isabel Claiborne Hume. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Carol Hume Bokinsky, husband Eric, Linda and Anne Hume, Stuart and Christian Taliaferro, Myers Fuller, Taz Fuller Falzon, husband Buddy, Cordelia Fuller, and many loving nieces and nephews. Stu will long be remembered for his kind heart and generous hospitality. He enjoyed his time with the younger generation. Many fond memories exist of his outdoor activities and especially the numerous hunting and deep-sea fishing excursions. The enormous void left in our hearts will be filled by memories of his love and generosity. He will be missed dearly. A burial service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk at 10 a.m. Monday, December 23, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at H.D.
