Humphries, justice of the peace, of South Norfolk and one of the best known residents of Norfolk county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph P. Bell, South Norfolk, at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, after an illness of several months. The deceased was born in Currituck County, N.C., July 8, 1833 and after attending Randolph-Macon College he began his public life early by being elected sheriff of his county and later served in the legislature of his state, two terms immediately at the close of the Civil War. He was one of the few Democrats elected to office in those days and was a strong sympathizer of the Southern States during the Reconstruction days He immigrated to Norfolk county 38 years ago and one of his first public acts was the part he played in the organization of Berkley Lodge No. 167, A.F. & A.M., of which he had been a continuous member. He held the position of commissioner of the revenue of Norfolk county, postmaster of Berkley and later justice of the peace, which position he held for a number of years. He took an active part in politics. He is survived by an invalid wife and five children: John R. Humphries, Mrs. Bell, at whose residence he passed away; Mrs. George Coxen; T.F. Humphries and Mrs. H.A. Cason, of this section; a sister, Mrs. A.P. Frost of Andover, N.J.; a half brother, James A. Wilson of Norfolk; three grandchildren: J.H. Bell, C.C. Bell and Miss Mary L. Bell. The funeral will be conducted from the residence, D and Twenty-secomd streets, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with Rev. R.B. Scott, pastor of Liberty Street M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. T. McN. Simpson, pastor of Memorial M.E. Church, of which the deceased was a member, officiating. The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. ************************************************************************* The funeral of the late Thomas C. Humphries was conducted from the residence of his daughter, Mrs J.P. Bell, D and Twenty-second streets, South Norfolk, yesterday and the attendance was the largest that has been seen on an occasion of the kind in many months. Rev. R.B. Scott, pastor of Liberty Street M.E. Church, officiated and was assisted by Rev. T. McN. Simpson, D.D., of Memorial M.E. Church and Rev. J.F. Carey of Park Place Methodist Church. The floral designs were numerous and beautiful. The interment was in Magnolia Cemetery. The pallbearers were: L. Berkley, J.S. Etheridge, Joseph Hutchings, P.G. Pool, from the citizens, and Major M.C. Keeling, E.W. McCloud, W.L. Berkley, L.A. Crisp, from the Mason of Doric Lodge and Berkley Lodge.
