Humphries, 80, Proofreader for Pilot, Dies Thomas Frost Humphries, 80, for more than a score of years employed by the Norfolk Virginian Pilot as a proofreader until his retirement several years ago, died yesterday at 4 a.m. at a local hospital after an illness of one day. Death was attributed to a heart attack. A native of Shawboro, N.C., he had lived in Norfolk practically all his life. He resided at 116 West Eleventh Street. When only 13, he started to learn the printer’s trade on the old Public Ledger, and during his early career published and edited the Berkley News, that suburb’s only daily newspaper. His newspaper activities also included work on the old Norfolk Post. He held membership in the Norfolk-Portsmouth Typographical Union No. 32. A son of the late T.C. and Mrs. Mary Frost Humphries, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. H.A. Cason, of Port Norfolk; one niece, Mrs. E.P. Ives of Oceana; two nephews, the Rev. C.C. Bell, D.D., of Lynchburg, and Joseph H. Bell, of Norfolk; two great nieces, Mrs. E. Ruffin Jones, Jr., of Gainesville, Fla. and Mrs. Joseph C. MacPhail of Bay City, Mich.; two great nephews, Howard P. Ives, of Oceana, and Lieut. C.C. Bell, Jr., Army doctor at Veterans Facility Hospital, Kecoughtan. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover Avenue, by the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D.D., pastor of Freemason Street Baptist Church, and the Rev. W.L. Murphy, assistant pastor of Epworth Methodist Church. Burial will be in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
