He was one of the best known on this side of the river, as he had made his home here for 50 years and had been in business for 40 years. He was a son of the late Malachi and Mrs. Matilda Gilbert Humphries and was born in Camden County, N.C. He was very active in the fraternal organizations of the city and was among the charter members of many of them. For years he represented them in the state and national gatherings. Among orders in which he was active were Tidewater Council, No. 30, Junior Order United American Mechanics; Chesapeake Tribe, No. 50, Improved Order of Red Men; Lee Lodge, No. 74, Improved Order of Odd Fellows; Silverstream Council, No. 18, Degree of Pocahontas and Goodwill Council, No. 5, Daughters of America. All of these orders have been called out to take part in the funeral services. Mr. Humphries is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marjorie Humphries: one son, E.T. Humphries, South Norfolk; one daughter, Mrs. C.O. Steele, Norfolk and one sister, Mrs. Zack Quidley, South Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home of E. Lee Cox, 124 E. Berkley Avenue, this afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. O.D. Poythress, pastor of the South Norfolk Christian Church, of which the deceased was an active member. Burial will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery.
