Thomas C. Hurst III, U.S. Navy retired, died May 18, 2004, at Bay Lake Retirement and Assisted Living Community. She was born in Norfolk, on July 4, 1920, was a member of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and was a graduate of Gunston Hall. Mrs. Hurst was the daughter of the late Mary J. Owen and Rear Admiral George T. Owen, U.S. Navy retired and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. As a young woman, she modeled in Washington, D.C. and volunteered her time during World War II to roll bandages for our troops. She later pursued an interest in oil painting, taking classes in Ernest Hemingway's garden in Key West, Fla. Her natural talent for cooking was further developed when she attended L'Ecole du Cordon Bleu in Paris. Mrs. Hurst spent the majority of her adult life as a loyal and devoted Navy wife and mother, focusing her many talents and energies on the needs of her children and their friends. She will be remembered by those who knew her for her boundless energy and a unique sense of humor and will be deeply missed by the many friends and family members who loved her. Mrs. Hurst was predeceased by her husband and by her brother, George Thomas Owen Jr. She is survived by her son, Leigh Gifford Hurst, and his wife, Anne Hahn Hurst of Christiansburg; her daughter, Terry Hurst Haisten, and her husband, H. Howard Haisten III of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Lauren Haisten Tabler and her husband, Rollins C. Tabler, Michael H. Haisten and Marshall Hahn Hurst; her niece, Jane Owen Carter and her husband, Jerry; and her nephew, Parker S. Owen, his wife, Valerie and their children, Zack and McKenzie. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk. The Rev. W. Jerry Holcomb of Kings Grant Baptist Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Food Closet of the Kings Grant Baptist Church, 837 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23452, or to the Salvation Army of Hampton Roads, 5524 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
