He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1943, serving until 1970, when he retired to assume the presidency of Norfolk, Baltimore & Carolina Lines, a local shipping company. Decorated for valor with the Bronze Star for submarine action in the Pacific during World War II, Capt. Hurst was also a veteran of Korea and Vietnam and was qualified in underwater demolition and submarine rescue/salvage operations. In addition to his many command billets, he pursued graduate studies at Oxford University in London, England, and American University in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and served as Polaris Plans Officer with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe before accepting assignment as the Naval Executive to the Deputy Supreme Commander Europe for Nuclear Affairs in Paris, France. After retirement, he served as president and chief operating officer of NB&C Lines until the onset of his illness in 1981. He was born in Norfolk, the son of the late Elizabeth T. Hebditch, and was a graduate of Maury High School. He was a member of Kings Grant Baptist Church and, before his illness, was active in civic and community affairs, including memberships in the Propeller Club and service as a Boy Scout Troop leader. He is survived by his wife, the former Nancy Gifford Owen of the home; his daughter, Terry Hurst Haisten and son-in-law, H. Howard Haisten of Virginia Beach; his son, Leigh Gifford Hurst and daughter-in-law, Anne Hahn Hurst of Christiansburg; and three grandchildren, Lauren and Michael Haisten and Marshall Hurst. He is also survived by his nephew, Parker Owen and wife, Valerie of Clemson, S.C.; his niece, Jane Owen Carter and husband, Jerry Carter of Virginia Beach; and a dear and special friend, Donna S. Mahrenholz of Virginia Beach. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by his family and the many friends who loved him. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, by the Rev. Jerry Holcomb. The family will be at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home, Laskin Road Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
