Hurst was cut with a knife in a duel at the Norfolk and Wester pier on the tugboat Luckenbach. Hurst was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital and received attendance from City Physician J.R. Speight, who at the time thought the man would recover. Acute peritonitis set in, however, and Dr. Speight considered the man's condition so serious that he send for the police, who took his anti-mortem statement on Sunday last. Hurst continued to sink and on the 20th instant died and was buried at the expense of the city in Calvary cemetery.
