She suffered a stroke about a year ago, but was doing well until suddenly stricken the night before she died. A funeral service was held at Shiloh Baptist Church Saturday. The Rev. A. E. Johnson, associate pastor, officiated. He was assisted by Father Joseph N. Green Jr., rector of Grace Episcopal Church. Melvin Gibbs, husband of Mrs. Barbara Saunders Gibbs, granddaughter, sang “Old Rugged Cross.” Active pallbearers were Southall Bass 3rd, Adolphus McWilliams, Simon Mitchell, Timothy Wells Sr., Richard Turner, David Hoggard Sr., A. T. Swann and William Spiller. Honorary pallbearers were Victor J. Ashe, Dr. Eugene Hodges, Dr. George Alston, Herolin DeLoatch, Addison King, James Gill, Ray Harrison, Sterling Walker, Wilton Daye and Russell Chavious. Mrs. Hutchings was born in Danville, VA. She was the daughter of the Junious and Mrs. Annie Corbett. She was the widow of Robert L. Hutchings. She came to Norfolk about 35 years ago. In her younger days, Mrs. Hutchings was active in her church. She was a member of the missionary society. She was a member of the Brambleton Garden Club, Community Circle and other organizations. Mrs. Hutchings was called Mother Hutch by those who knew her. Among out-of-town persons attending the funeral were Mrs. Herman Melton, a niece, and Mr. Melton, Richmond; Major W. U. Corbett Jr., nephew and Mrs. Corbett, and Ellis E. Corbett, a cousin of A. and T. College, Greensboro NC. Mrs. Hutchings is survived by a son, Elmo C. Hutchings, Elmira NY; two daughters, Mrs. Ann H. Abraham, Norfolk and Richmond and Mrs. Hope H. Boykins, Norfolk; a foster daughter, Mrs. Joan A. Corbett, Sausalito CA; three grandchildren, Mrs. Barbara Saunders Gibbs, Washington DC; Harold Hutchings, Elmira NY; and Miss Jan Natalie Boykins, Norfolk; one great-granddaughter, Miss Resa Lynne Gibbs, Washington DC; a brother, William Corbett, Richmond; a sister, Mrs. Lucy C. Hayes, Richmond; two sons-in-law, Ralph N. Boykins and Robert Saunders, both of Norfolk. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Riddick’s Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
