VERNON I'ANSON, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, DIES AT HOME HERE Had Been Chaplain General of Confederate Division for Many Years. The Rev. Vernon I'Anson, D.D., aged 74, chaplain general of the Virginia Division, Army of Northern Virginia, United Confederate Veterans, and prominent Baptist clergyman, died here yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his residence, 611 Colonial avenue. Dr. I'Anson had been pastor of some of the largest Baptist churches in the South. He baptized more than 3,000 persons into the Baptist church during his ministry and was recognized a one of the most successful clergymen in the church for years. He was the youngest son of Mackey Dunlop I'Anson, of Petersburg, and Jane Thornton of Prince Edward County. The youngest of four brothers, the remaining three of whom were majors in the Army of the South during the War Between the States. Dr. I'Anson was among the youngest students at Hampden-Sidney College at the outbreak of the sectional strife. He immediately joined the Hampden-Sidney Reserves when they were mustered in the Army of the South, being later transferred to Young's Howitzer Company of Norfolk, and remaining in the service until the close of the war. For many years, Dr. I'Anson had been chaplain general of the Veterans' division. He will be buried in the uniform of the Confederacy. Dr. I'Anson's wife, who was Miss Mattie Tillar (sic) I'Anson, of Greenville County, died in 1911. He will be buried beside her in Elmwood Cemetery. In addition to being a Confederate veteran, Dr. I'Anson was a thirty-second degree Mason, a Shriner, a Knights Templar, an Elk, an Odd Fellow and held membership in other organizations. Dr. I'Anson is survived by a son, D. T. I'Anson, Norfolk lawyer, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Nielson and Mrs. Annie J. Terry, both of Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at noon at the First Baptist Church by the Rev. Howard I. Stewart, D.D., the pastor, and the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D.D., pastor of Freemason Street Baptist Church.
