He was 77. Iredell, a native of Norfolk, had retired in 1977 with his wife, Elizabeth Sargeant Iredell, as curator of St. Luke's Church in Smithfield after 10 years. The church, one of the oldest in America, was built in 1632 and was opened as a historic shrine in 1957. The couple took the appointment after Iredell retired from Texaco, Inc. after 47 years as an accountant. At the beginning, they gave tours, ran the gift shop, kept the grounds and did all the odd jobs. Later, guides and groundskeepers also were hired and the Iredells handled the gift shop, buying and bookkeeping. Iredell is the namesake of his great-great-grandfather, James Iredell, a North Carolina lawyer and patriot who participated in the Revolutionary War. George Washington appointed him a justice in the country's first Supreme Court. The Iredell House, which was his home, is one of five historical sites on the Edenton (NC) Tour. Iredell was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was former member of the Smithfield Rotary Club and Lynch Anchorage at Ocean View. Other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. George D. Heath and Camilla F. Hoffler, both of Norfolk, Elizabeth S. Francis of Woodbridge, England, and Mrs. Lloyd L. Leech Jr., of El Paso, Texas, and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at noon Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. Vincent Connery. Burial will be private in Elmwood Cemetery. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, is in charge. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
