Jacocks, Sr., Retired Road Inspector, Victim In Portsmouth Accident A collision between an automobile and an eastbound Atlantic Coast Line freight train yesterday afternoon resulted in the instant death of H.M. Jacocks, Sr., 71, a retired State Highway Department road inspector. Police reported that the train struck the car at approximately 1:20 p.m. at the Coast Line crossing at Rodman Avenue on High Street. The train reportedly dragged the vehicle for approximately 50 feet before coming to a stop. Employed by the State Highway Department since January 25, 1933, Jacocks was retired last August 15. He lived at 17 Prospect Parkway, Cradock. Mr. Jacocks was a graduate engineer of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1900. A native of Durants Neck, Perquimans County, N.C., he had resided for 30 years in the Portsmouth area and before that about 20 years in Berkley. His late wife was Mrs. Ellen Miller Jacocks. His late parents were Jonathan H. and Mrs. Mary Katherine Harrell Jacocks. Surviving are five sons, John D. Jacocks, of Newport News; Henry M. Jacocks, Jr., and Wilbur H. Jacocks, both of Cradock; Alfred M. Jacocks, of Norfolk, and Claude L. Jacocks, of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Miss Estelle Jacocks, of Berkley, and seven grandchildren. The body was taken to the Sykes Funeral Home, Berkley. ****************************** Henry M. Jacocks - Funeral services for Mr. Jacocks, who died Wednesday when his automobile was struck by a train in Portsmouth, were conducted yesterday at 3 p.m. at the Sykes Funeral Home, Berkley, by the Rev. C.W. Haley, pastor of the Afton Presbyterian Church, Cradock. Pallbearers were G.E. Derby, R.N. Brennaman, P.M. Steinback, F.R. Robertson, J.C. Brady, and S.T. Barker, Jr. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery, Berkley.
