Mrs. James was a native of Norfolk and had retired from food service at the Naval Base Exchange. She was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and of its Female Usher Board No. 2. She was the widow of Hubert James. She was a member of Word of Life Senior Citizens Club; Mason and Holmes Missionary Circle; Flora Club; and the Adult Sunday School Class Club. She was a member of Blooming Light No. 111 Chapter of The Order of The Eastern Star. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Carrie B. and Charlie Williams. Survivors include a goddaughter, Shery Booker of Norfolk; a sister, Rhoda M. Howard of Norfolk; a brother, Kenneth Williams of Norfolk; five nieces, Vernice Howard of Washington, D.C., Mabel Howard and Doris Howard, both of Norfolk, Dolores Pritchard of Virginia Beach and Esther Joyner of Durham, N.C.; and three nephews, Vernon Howard of Florida, McCurtis Joynes of Ahoskie, N.C. and Charlie Joyner of Bronx, N.Y. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. Raymond Dean. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hale Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The family will assemble at the residence.
