A native of Newport, NC, he was a son of the late John and Mrs. Frances James and the husband of the late Mrs. Alvania P. James. He formerly worked for Taylor Salt & Chemical Co. and Eastern Steamship. He was honorary deacon and trustee of Antioch Baptist Church, Berkley. Surviving are a son, Charlie C. James Jr., a daughter, Mrs. Ruby R. Cooper, and a sister, Mrs. Oney George, all of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; and a great- grandchild. Services were held in Antioch Baptist Church by Dr. I. Joseph Williams. Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery with Fitchett Funeral Home in charge.
