Virginian Pilot February 19, 1973

Norfolk-Ellis Mellen James, 61, of 6110 Powhatan Ave., real estate broker, and 
former newspaper reporter, died Sunday at 6:29 a.m. in his home.
A native of McKeesport, Pa., he lived here 33 years.
He was the husband of Mrs. Ruth Wilson James and a son of William C. and Mrs. 
Letia Cooke James.
He had been a real estate broker since WWII and at one time was vice president 
of the Norfolk Board of Realtors.
In his earlier life, he reported for newspapers in New York State and in 
Virginia, including The Virginian Pilot.
He was area rent examiner for OPA in Norfolk during World War II.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. He had been a Sunday school 
teacher at Epworth United Methodist Church and Freemason Street Baptist Church.
He was past chairman of the Republican City Committee and at his death was 
president of the Norfolk Round Table.
During Massive Resistance, in 1958, he was one of 11 parents whose court suit 
resulted in the reopening of public schools in Norfolk.
Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Miss Ruth Pendleton James of 
Baltimore; two sons, Ellis Whedon James and Navy Lt. Cmdr. Franklin Wilson 
James, both of Norfolk; and four grandchildren, Jaren Elizabeth James, Mark 
Christopher James, Anne Maria James, and Catherine Kellie James of Norfolk.
The body was taken to Hollomon Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive. In lieu of 
flowers, the family suggest donations to a charity of choice.
