Her throat had been slashed with a crude knife. The victim was Mrs. Martha Virginia Brinson James, a native of Norfolk, Va., whose husband, Ensign Richard F. James, had been compelled by crowded traveling conditions to take another and earlier section of the same train. The body of Mrs. James lay in the Lane County morgue tonight while her grief stricken husband backtracked here from Klamath Falls, where he was told of the tragedy, to claim it. Body To Be Brought Here For Funeral Mrs. Martha Virginia Brinson James was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur G. Brinson, of Algonquin Park, Norfolk, who were in a state of near collapse last night. A native of Norfolk, Mrs. James graduated from Maury High School and attended the Norfolk Division, College of William and Mary, and Sweet Briar College. She was married in Norfolk last September 19 to Ensign Richard Floyd James, Naval Reserve aviator, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mapp James, of Nassawadox. He attended the University of Virginia. Survivors include Mrs. James mother, the former Miss Grace Hart; her father, who is eastern district manager for the Logan & Kanawha Coal Company and prominently identified with civic activities; two younger sisters, Grace Anne Brinson and Mary Jane Brinson; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Julia A. Brinson, of Grantsboro, N.C. and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. W.V. Hart, of Norfolk. Complete story of incident in Norfolk Virginian Pilot January 24, 1943 **************************************************************************** Martha Virginia James Rites This Afternoon Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Virginia Brinson James, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Brinson, of Norfolk, and wife of Ensign Richard James, who was slashed to death a week ago yesterday while she slept in a West Coast train, will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the First Christian Church, Disciples. Mrs. James body arrived here yesterday and was taken to the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home and later to the Brinson home. The Rev. C.M. Gordon, D.D., pastor of the church, will conduct the services, assisted by the Rev. Edward Rees, D.D., pastor of Ghent Methodist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
