David Jennings, D.D., pioneer Baptist minister and for 37 years past of the Lambert’s Point First Baptist Church. The interment ceremonies following services at the Lambert’s Point church two and a half hours earlier where members of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Norfolk, Portsmouth,and Vicinity were in charge. The Rev. G. W. Watkins D.D., president of the conference, served as master of ceremonies. Dr. Jennings died in a local hospital Thursday night of last week after a lengthy illness. With his church filled to overflowing with sorrowing relatives, members of the church, visiting ministers from several cities, and representatives of the Grand United Order of St. Luke the deceased minister was described variously as “a venerable servant of the Lord,” “a great and humble man:” “a warrior who wrought well” “a true brother and a Christian gentleman,” and an “humble servant of God.” In addition to members of the Baptist Ministers Conference, the local A. M. E. Preachers Meeting was likewise well represented. Present also were colleagues of the deceased from sections of the Peninsula including Hampton, Newport News and Phoebus as well as other sections of the state. The Rev. O. J. Allen, pastor of the First Calvary Baptist Church and president of the Baptist General Association of Virginia, represented the latter body, while Dr. P. Madison, pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church and president of the Virginia Baptist State convention, represented that body. Others appearing on the funeral program included the Revs. D. Y. Campbell, pastor of New Calvary Baptist Church; A. A. Galvin, C. E. Jones, of Newport News; P. P. Eton of the Queen Street Baptist Church; I. M. Garrison, Rose of Sharon Baptist Church. R. K. D. Garrett, Garrett’s Community Church; F. W. Williams, Central Baptist Church; H. N. Johnson, Ebenezer Baptist, Portsmouth; W. W. Howell, C. C. Somerville, Mt. Olivet Baptist, Portsmouth. R. H. Bowling, Bute Street Baptist; W. G. Sharp, Mt. Vernon Baptist, Portsmouth; and others.
