Virginian Pilot October 17, 1989

                      JAMES L. JERNIGAN, BUILDING CONTRACTOR

James Levon Jernigan Sr., 82, of the 500 block of Downey Drive, a retired 
building contractor, died Oct. 15, 1989.
Mr. Jernigan, a native of Norfolk County, was the founder of Jernigan 
Enterprises.  He was the widower of Louise R. Jernigan and a member of South 
Norfolk Baptist Church in Chesapeake. 
Survivors include a daughter, Marie J. Goodwin of Virginia Beach; a son, James 
Jernigan Jr. of Virginia Beach; a sister, Nellie Sawyer and a brother, Norman T. 
Jernigan, both of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Magnolia Cemetery 
by the Rev. Frank Hughes Jr.  Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, 
is handling arrangements.
