He was a native of Hardine, Lebanon, and has been a resident of Hampton Roads for 93 years. He was the son of the late George Barket and Mary Decker John. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sadie of 64 years. Nabbie served his country in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a Roman Catholic and a member of The Church of the Holy Family. He was a self-made man who was the founder and retired owner of the family business, John Brothers Plastering, Inc. He was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Lebanon, Knights of Columbus Council #3548, and the International Order of the Alhambra Padul Caravan #69, where he was a Past Grand Commander. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Barbara John Thomas and her husband Martin of Virginia Beach; his sons, Paul J. John and his wife Debie and Nabbie G. John Jr. and his wife Linda, all of Norfolk. He is also survived by his sister Anna Barket Green of Chicago, Illinois; six grandchildren: Tonya J. Strickland and her husband Jason, Martin A. Thomas, Jr. and his wife Maggie, Rebecca T. Zborowski and her husband Eric, Nabbie G. John III, Christopher P. John and John Paul Thomas; 4 Great Grandchildren: Trevor, Martin III, Michael and Sadie and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Nabbie loved his family, fishing, crabbing and living on the beach in the house he built. The family would like to express their appreciation to Lester and Louise Rickman, Freda H. Gordon Hospice and Palliative Care of Tidewater and Seniorcorp for the loving care they gave to their father. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Monday, June 16, at 11:00 AM. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk. The Reverend Father Gaudencio Pugat, S.V.D. will officiate. A Christian Wake service will be held in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Sunday at 6:00 PM followed by a visitation with the family until 8:00 PM.
