Mr. Johnson was a native of Edenton, NC, and had lived in Norfolk 70 years. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Base four years ago after serving more than 30 years. The deceased was a member of Evening Star lodge, Norfolk New Light lodge, the Royal Mission Circle and the Brotherhood of Deacons. A member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, he was honorary chairman of the deacon board, and had been a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. His eulogy was delivered by the Rev. J. Q. A. Lassiter, pastor of Bethlehem. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery under direction of the Hale Funeral Home. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Townes Johnson; a son, Hilton G. Johnson Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Cherry and Mrs. Eleanor J. King, both of Norfolk; a stepson, Raymond Townes; and seven grandchildren, Vivian, William, Henry, and James Cherry, Eleanor Jacqueline King, Hilton G. Johnson 3rd, and James Johnson.
