W. Johnson, of South Norfolk, Injured at 6:40 A.M., Dies at 11:25 A.M. Rufus Walter Johnson, aged 51, of Beech Street, South Norfolk, died yesterday morning at 11:25 o'clock as the result of a fractured skull he received at 6:40 a.m., when he, riding a bicycle, collided with an automobile operated by Raymond W. Garrett, of Route No. 2, Portsmouth. The accident occurred at Rogers and Poindexter Streets, South Norfolk. Garrett, who took Johnson to St. Vincent's Hospital, later was arrested by Patrolman Herbert Van Vleek, and charged with manslaughter. He will be given a preliminary hearing before Mayor B.H. Gibson June 12. Mr. Johnson was going to his work at the William Sloane plant when the accident occurred. He was a native of Halifax County, N.C., but had made his home in South Norfolk many years. He leaves, besides his wife, Mrs. Sallie Wilder Johnson, two daughters, Mrs. R.S. Sawyer, of Portsmouth and Miss Stella Johnson, of South Norfolk, one son, Ernest Johnson, of South Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. William Merrick and Mrs. Walter Tippett, and one brother, Duncan Johnson, all of North Carolina. The body will be taken from the funeral home of E. Lee Cox to the residence tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock for funeral services and burial, which will follow in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery. ******************************************************************** JOHNSON, RUFUS WALTER - Suddenly in a local hospital Tuesday, June 4, 1929, at 11:25 o'clock, RUFUS WALTER JOHNSON, of Beech Street, South Norfolk, a native of Halifax County, N.C., son of the late Dudley and Mrs. Martha Pair Johnson, and husband of Mrs. Sallie Wilder Johnson, aged 51 years, 8 months and 22 days. The body will be taken from the funeral home of E. Lee Cox, 124 E. Berkley Avenue, to the family residence THURSDAY AFTERNOON for funeral services at 4:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery. Friends are invited. ********** Rufus W. Johnson - Funeral services for Mr. Johnson, who was killed in an automobile accident on Poindexter Street, South Norfolk, Tuesday morning, will be conducted at the residence on Beech Street, South Norfolk Heights, this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The Rev. O.D. Poythress, pastor of the South Norfolk Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
