He was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina by his grandmother, Janie Poe and his beloved Aunt Minnie along with his brother, Robert Johnson Jr., and sister, Nezzie Gibson Allen, both preceding him in passing. He married Helen Williams Garner in 1948 and they were blessed with two children, Arthur III and Angela. The Johnsons recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Their union was an inspiration for all who knew them. They lovingly attended to each other in sickness and in health. After serving in the United States Army, he worked at the United States Naval Supply Center Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia (N.O.B.) before relocating his family to Brooklyn, New York in 1957. After a short stint as a New York City Police Officer proved to be unfulfilling, he followed his interest in helping others by pursuing a career in nursing. He was employed by the Federal Government at the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Medical Center as a Nursing Assistant. He was honored in 1987 for 30 years of service to the United States Government. Affectionately called “Sonny” by his peers, he became “Mr. J.” and “Granddad” to many. He loved music and dancing and would “cut a mean rug” or break into song at anytime. He enjoyed preparing down-home feasts for family holiday dinners and took special pride in his sweet potato pies. He was also a sports fan and served as a golf caddy as a youth. He had a passion for baseball and was an avid New York Yankees fan and also enjoyed Brooklyn Cyclone games at their stadium in Coney Island. He was a lifelong member of Eastern Light Lodge #4, Norfolk, Virginia and served as Worshipful Master from 1951-1952. Masonic virtues of brotherly love, relief and trust were lived and practiced in rearing his family and as an outstanding member of his community. The angels came for him early Thursday morning March 17, 2016. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Helen, children: Arthur Johnson, III and Angela Johnson Amole, beloved grandchildren: Tayo Amole and wife Selma, Remi Amole and wife Kamalia, Korede Amole and Jare Amole, great- grandchildren: Ajani, Kemiola and Kaloji, nephews: Michael Johnson and wife Janina, Jack Gibson and wife Debra, nieces: Yvonne Gibson and Sharon Allen, nephew-in-law: Bruce Stanley Garner, generations of nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws, relatives-in-love: Gertrude Dyson and husband Carl, adopted grand: Stacey Meekins, Niran Amole and a host of long-time friends and caring neighbors.
