Johnson, 75, of the 700 block of B Ave. in Norfolk, died Sept. 25, 1994, in Sentara Leigh Hospital. Mr. Johnson was a retired first class pipefitter from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Ivor, Va., to John E. and Rosa B. Johnson. At an early age, he joined New Branch Baptist Church in Ivor, where he was a member of the choir and served as assistant superintendent of the Sunday School. He moved to Norfolk in 1941 and joined First Baptist Church, Bute Street. As a member of First Baptist Church, he served on the Men's Usher Board, Male Chorus and the Men's Progressive League. Mr. Johnson was also a member of the Deacon Board and served as first vice-chairman for five years. In addition to his church affiliations, Mr. Johnson rendered over 50 years of dedicated service to the Free and Accepted Masons. He began his service at Ivor Grove Lodge where he rose to the position of worshipful master. He was later demitted to Progressive Lodge No. 80 in Norfolk and was a member of Cohesion Court No. 3. Mr. Johnson held many positions, including past high priest of Cohesion Chapter of Royal Arch No. 14, past commander-in-chief of Alpha and Omega Consistory No. 9, and past illustrious potentate of Arabia Temple No. 12. Due to his dedication and steadfast attachment to the principles of Freemasonry, he had been coronated a 33rd degree Mason of the Supreme Council. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Geraldine S. Johnson; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie J. Russell, Mrs. Lorraine J. Stephens and Mrs. Rosalyn J. Credle; one brother, Mr. J. Howard Johnson; two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, seven nieces, three nephews, other relatives and friends. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Graves Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, 418 E. Bute St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Dr. Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
