Mr. Johnson, a native of Norfolk, was the son of the late Hubert E. and Mamie Jordan Johnson and was a member of Greater Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church. His teaching positions ranged from secondary school to the university level of instruction. His first teaching position was in Rockville, Md., as a mathematics teacher. He also taught mathematics at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and at Virginia State University. His last position before retiring was special assistant to President Harrison B. Wilson at Norfolk State University. While at Virginia State, Mr. Johnson was also the Upward Bound Project Director. He was the founder, president and executive secretary of the Virginia Conference of Science and Mathematics Teachers, 1947-1963. He received his undergraduate degree from Virginia State College, now University, and earned his master's degree from Columbia University. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Lambda Omega Chapter. Survivors include his wife, Cleona E. Johnson of the home; one daughter, Imelda Johnson-Hall of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one son, James H. Johnson Jr. of Atlanta; one granddaughter, Lauren Ashley Blair Johnson; a devoted niece, Beverly Gayle Grier; and several cousins, including Marietta Davidson. A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Greater Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, Brambleton Ave. at Pulaski St., by the Rev. Joseph Lamb. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
