Virginian Pilot and Norfolk Landmark Saturday January 25, 1930
Charles Howard Johnston, aged 87, son of the late James H. and Louisa Custis 
Garrison Johnston, a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk, died at 3:05 
o'clock yesterday morning at his home in the Bentmore Apartments, 524 
Graydon park. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sallie A. Williams Johnston; 
two daughters, Mrs. R.E. Jordan and Miss Anna E. Johnston; one son, James H. 
Johnston, all of Norfolk, and two granddaughters, Mrs. E.D. Kyle, of New 
York and Miss Virginia H. Johnston, of Norfolk. Funeral services will be 
held at the residence today at 12 o'clock noon, the Rev. E. Ruffin Jones, 
D.D., rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will 
be private in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Johnston was for several terms city collector of Norfolk.
