Norfolk - Betty Lou Fentress Johnston, 88, died May 25, 2016. She was a native 
and lifelong resident of Norfolk and was the daughter of the late Robert Parker 
Fentress and Myrtle Ridenour Fentress. She was preceded in death by her son, 
Edward Callender Johnston, Jr., her daughter, Nancy Johnston Byrd, her grandson, 
Kenneth William Knight, II, and her son-in-law, Allen L Byrd. Mrs. Johnston 
graduated from Granby High School and Coker College, Hartsville, SC. She taught 
for 25 years in Norfolk Public Schools, first at Granby Elementary and later at 
Bayview Elementary. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 
Norfolk, and the Elizabeth River Women's Club. She loved her work in the yard 
and time spent at a second home in Sandbridge. She also spent much of her time 
reading good books. Mrs. Johnston is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, 
Edward Callender Johnston, and two grandchildren, Matthew Parker Knight and 
Kristen Johnston Robertson and her husband, Terry, and two great-grandchildren, 
T. J. Robertson and Faith Robertson. Funeral services will be at the Episcopal 
Church of the Ascension on Tuesday, May 31, at 11:00 am. Burial will be private 
at Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, VA. Memorial donations may be made to the church 
at 405 Talbot Hall Rd., Norfolk 23505, or the Norfolk Botanical Garden, 6700 
Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk 23518. Mr. Johnston wants to thank Sharon Cribb and 
the staff of Sentara Hospice for the wonderful care given to Betty Lou in her 
last months. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel is handling arrangements.
