Johnston, 91, died May 22, 2017. He was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk and was the son of the late James Brooks Johnston and Virginia Callender Johnston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Fentress Johnston, his son, Edward Callender Johnston, Jr., his daughter, Nancy Johnston Byrd and her husband, Allen Byrd, his brother, James B. Johnston, Jr., his sister, Virginia Clements, and his grandson, Kenneth William Knight, II. Mr. Johnston was a wrangler in New Mexico for a formative time during his youth and later he graduated from Belmont Abby Prep School, going on to attend the Norfolk Division of William and Mary. He served his country honorably in the Virginia National Guard as a Sergeant in the 111 Field Artillery, 29th Division. He was the Founder and President of Albemarle Supply Company--a janitorial and paper supply company--from 1956 to 2006. He was a member and former Vestryman of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Norfolk, and Charter member of Suburban Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Owens Masonic Lodge #164 and the Khedive Temple. He was a board member of the Girls' Club of Norfolk, and he was also a long-serving member of the Board of Trustees for the Norfolk Botanical Garden. Mr. Johnston loved spending time at his Sandbridge cottage, was an avid golfer, and a great friend to many; he was known for his generosity and willingness to assist numerous people in times of need. He is survived by his brother, Robert Ross Johnston of Virginia Beach, two grandchildren, Matthew P. Knight and Kristen Johnston Robertson and her husband, Terry, and two great-grandchildren, T. J. and Faith Robertson. Funeral services will be at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension on Friday at 12:00P.M. Burial will be private at Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, VA. The family will receive friends in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Thursday evening from 6 to 8 P.M.
