Born in Norfolk on October 27, 1884, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnston. He was married to the late Katherine H. Dickson, of Norfolk, in 1914, and is survived by two children of this marriage, William Dickson Johnston, of Delmar, Calif., and Mrs. L. Wood Bedell, of Richmond, and six grandchildren. He also is survived by his wife, the former Helene Swatkowsky, whom he married in 1950. Other survivors are a brother, Robert S. Johnston, of Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. J. Warren White, of Norfolk, and Mrs. Joseph K. Taussig, of Washington, and eight nieces and nephews. Graduate of Davidson A graduate of Davidson College, he also attended Princeton University and received his law degree from the University of Virginia. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar Association in 1909. At the time of his death, he was a member of Clark, Carr and Ellis Law Firm of New York City. During World War I, he served in the Navy with the rank of lieutenant. After World War II, he was legal advisor to the United Kingdom-United States Steel Control Group in Dusseldorf, Germany. In Virginia, he is well known as a director of the Barter Theater of Virginia, director and vice president of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation and vice president of St. Luke's Restoration in Smithfield. Member of Bar Association A member of the American Bar Association, he was also a member of the Bar Association of the City of New York and was a director of the Industrial Bank of Commerce of New York, the Bankers Security Life Insurance Society of New York, and the Old Dominion Paper Co., of Norfolk. Author of "What Rights Are Left," published in 1930, he also contributed many articles to the North American Review, Century Magazine, Outlook, U.S. Law Review and the American Bar Association Journal.
