Johnston
 was ordained a 
priest in the 
Roman Catholic Church in
 1924, and was a
 former pastor
 of Sacred
 Heart Catholic
 Church in Norfolk. He was assistant pastor
 of St. Paul's 
Catholic Church in Portsmouth and served in churches in Newport News, Arlington, Clarendon, Hot Springs, Harrisonburg and Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Johnston began studying for the priesthood after working in the advertising department of a Norfolk newspaper. In the 1930s, he served as Civilian Conservation Corps chaplain in the Shenandoah Valley. He became an Army chaplain and served in North Africa and Italy, after first being assigned to posts in Indiana and Massachusetts. He left the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel and was in the Army Reserve. He is survived by his sister, Mary Olive Johnston of Norfolk. A Joyful Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 2 p.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Bishop Walter J. Sullivan. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, is in charge. The family will be at 533 Ben Hogan Drive in the Larkspur section of Virginia Beach.
