Virginian-Pilot  January 26, 1942
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Johnston, aged 77, widow of Edward William Johnston, and 
daughter of the late Burwell and Mrs. Olive Flora Mathias, died last night at 8:45 
o’clock. She was a native of Currituck County, N.C., and a resident of Norfolk for 
the past 70 years, residing at 927 Harrington avenue at the time of her death. She 
was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and the Sodality of the Blessed 
Virgin of that church. Surviving are two daughters, Misses Mary Olive and 
Elizabeth Johnston, both of Norfolk; four sons, the Rev. Edward W. Johnston, of 
Arlington; J. Hubert Johnston, of Norfolk; Capt. Thomas Joseph Johnston, U. S. A., 
and Laurence V. Johnston, of Portsmouth; nine grandchildren, and a number of 
nieces and nephews.
The body was taken to the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial avenue, 
pending arrangements.
