NORFOLK - Mrs. Rita Hartwell Johnston, 83, formerly of 927 Harrington Ave., the 
widow of Lt. Col. Thomas J. Johnston and a native of Baltimore, died Thursday in a 
hospital.
Survivors include a son, retired Marine Corps Col. Thomas J. Johnston Jr. of 
Virginia Beach; a brother, Bartholomew Hartwell of Florida; and five 
grandchildren.
A Christian Wake service will be held tonight at 7:30 in H. D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart 
Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
