JONES DIES; SOUTHSIDE BUILDER, BANKER Services Tomorrow for Contractor of Churches, Banks, Schools, Homes John Wesley Jones, 93, chairman of the board of the Berkley Permanent Building and Loan Association, Inc., and widely known Southside contractor, died yesterday at 5:15 a.m. at his residence, 210 Hardy Avenue, Berkley. He had been ill for four years. A son of the late William and Mrs. Frances Jones, he was born in the Southside and had been identified with its affairs since an early age. Entering the contracting and building business when he was 20 years old, he built many public buildings and residences during his long career. About 50 years ago he supervised the erection of the Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church, South Norfolk, of which he was then a member. Later he built the Memorial Methodist Church, Berkley, of which he was a member at the time of his death. Mr. Jones also constructed the Merchants and Planters Bank in Berkley and its branches in Campostella and South Norfolk. He was a director of the bank. Two schools in South Norfolk and a school in Berkley were built by him. Connected with the Berkley Permanent Building and Loan Association for many years, he served as president of the corporation for some time. When he relinquished the office of president, he was made chairman of the board, a position created for him in recognition of his services to the firm. He was past master and a member of Doric Lodge No. 44, A.F. and A.M. His wife, Mrs. Clara Tilley Jones, died several years ago. Surviving are two sons, Wesley T. Jones, of Chicago, and Raymond T. Jones, of Norfolk; two daughters, Mrs. Delna B. White and Mrs. Clara F. Pratt, also of Norfolk; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the Sykes Funeral Home tomorrow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
