J.F. Jones, Former Shoe Merchant, Dies at Age of 78

Joseph Frye Jones, 78, died at the residence, 1357 Magnolia Avenue, 
yesterday afternoon at 12:15 o'clock.  He is survived by three daughters, 
Mrs. Joseph G. Claud, Jr. and Miss Mary Adele Jones, both of Norfolk and 
Mrs. Samuel Cletus Johnson, of Newport News; three grandsons, Waring W. and 
Joseph G. Claud, 3rd, and Richard Waring Johnson, and three sisters, Mrs. 
M.E. Starlings, of Fernandino, Fla.; Mrs. E.E. Starlings, of Baltimore and 
Mrs. Annie Hopkins, of Glenburnie, Md.  Mr. Jones was a native of Anne 
Arundel County, Md., and had been a resident of Norfolk for 45 years.  He 
was a shoe merchant in Norfolk from 1900 until 1929 and retired from active 
business in 1938.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home 
tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
