L. C. JONES PASSED AWAY The End Came Yesterday Morning-- Was One of Berkley's Foremost Public Spirited Men Mr. Lewis C. Jones, one of Berkley's best known citizens, passed away yesterday morning at 8:33 o'clock at the family residence on North Main street, after an illness since Friday morning. The deceased had been indisposed several days, but went about at will until Friday morning, when he became unconscious about 9 o'clock and was found by his wife shortly afterwards. He rallied several times, but continued to weaken until death ended an active and progressive life. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Sarah A (Bott) Jones, a native of Amelia County, Va., five children - one daughter, Alice -- four sons, Nathan, L.C., Jr., Frank, Raymond; three sisters, Mrs. George H. Kirby, Mrs. Charles Russell, Mrs.William Seay and one brother, Mr. N. Sidney Jones, all of this city. Mr. Jones was born in Smithfield, Va., in 1851 and moved to Berkley a few years after, where he has resided since. The most of his life has been devoted to the ship building industry, being for several years part owner of the shipyard known as L.C. Jones & Co., afterwards acquiring the entire concern, and has succeeded in running a flourishing business for more than twenty years. He was a member of the first elected council of Berkley, placed there by the democratic voters, of which party he was a loyal member. He ably served the town in this capacity for two terms, always having the welfare of the town and county at heart. He was one of the foremost in the belief that the greatest good could be accomplished by the consolidation of Portsmouth, Norfolk and Berkley. He was a member of the Business Men's Association of Norfolk for several years. He was a charter member of Berkley lodge No. 278, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and a charter member of Robert E. Lee lodge No. 48, K. of P., of Berkley. The funeral will be conducted from the residence this afternoon at 3 o'clock and the interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. W. Asbury Christian, pastor of Memorial M.E. Church, and Rev. Robert Gatewood, pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, will officiate. The lodges of which he was a member will turn out in a body at the grave.
