On Sunday morning last, the schooner Ruth Shaw, Captain James McElwee, of Bridgeton, N. J., bound from New York to Richmond, with a cargo of hay, put into this port, having on board one of her crew, a white seaman, by the name of John Jones, who had, while walking the deck about 11 a.m. on the preceding day, while the schooner was off Winter Quarters Shoal, been struck on the head by the foreboom and his skull fractured. The United States marine hospital ambulance proceeded to Fort Norfolk, where the injured man was landed and conveyed to the Hospital of St. Vincent de Paul where, after continuing in an unconscious condition for some hours, he died at 11 p.m. Sunday night. His remains will be buried here. Additional Comments: From his obituary, his death was February 19. From the death register, it was the 20th.
