NORFOLK - Dr. Jerome Walker Jones Sr., 43, of the 2800 block Mapleton Avenue, a 
graduate of Booker T. Washington High school and a former college instructor, 
was shot to death Wednesday night in New York's Harlem section.

He taught economics at Payne College, Augusta, Ga. from September 1971 until 
October 1972 and had to quit due to ill health.

Jones, a native of Norfolk, was valedictorian of his class at Virginia State 
College in Petersburg, where he received his bachelor of arts degree.

He had received a master's degree and a doctor of philosophy degree from Harvard 
University.

Jones also taught at Norfolk State College, and Tennessee Agricultural and 
Industrial State University in Nashville.

He was visiting relatives in New York.

Jones was the son of the late Joel W. Eliza B. Jones. He is survived by three 
daughters, Miss Elaine Jones, Miss Joyce Jones, and Miss Sheryl Jones of 
Richmond; two sons, Jerome W. Jones Jr. and Hugh Jones of Richmond; two sisters, 
Mrs. Blanche Smith and Mrs. Gladys McCabe of Norfolk; and a brother, Joseph C. 
Jones of Norfolk.

The body was taken to Graves Funeral Home.

Additional Comments:
NORFOLK - A funeral service for Dr. Jerome W. Jones will be conducted Monday at 
noon in the First Church of Christ Holiness. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery 
with Graves Funeral Home in charge. The family will be at 2804 Mapleton Ave.
