Frederick Jones has become one of the country's leading names in hat design. His dramatic millinery styles are worn by the famous and near-famous. As a result, Mr. Jones was honored at the Harveys Bristol Cream Tribute to the Black Designer '83 on March 23 in Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York. Born in Norfolk, Va., Mr. Jones first demonstrated an interest in sewing at age 12. His talent became recognized by Tess Cantin, proprietor of Norfolk's most prestigious millinery shop. There he learned the fundamentals of designing. He was fashion director for several large department stores in Philadelphia including Saks Fifth Avenue, Wanamakers and Gimbels. In 1976, he left Gimbels to give New York a try. His custom-designed hats were immediately commissioned by Henri Bendel and Bergdorf Goodman. Many famous designers and entertainers have commissioned Frederick Jones to design hats to compliment their wardrobes, including Lena Horne, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Grace Jones and Gladys Knight, among others. Many of his custom hats feature silk flowers with silk, taffeta and velvet ribbons. His designs have been featured in numerous publications including Vogue, Essence and Omni magazines, the Detroit Free Press and the New York Times. Most recently, his creations were featured in a new fashion book entitled Fashion, 2001. Frederick is survived by his mother, Nellie Jones; a sister, Lois Freeman; and a brother, Ronald Jones, all of Norfolk. A funeral service is scheduled for noon Tuesday, May 18, at Graves Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Friends may join the family at 410 Pendleton St., Apt. B. There will be a wake service from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday.
