Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Monday, December 4, 1995 
Gaither Rencher Jones, 93, our beloved grandmother and aunt, slipped quietly
away to her eternal rest, on Dec. 1, 1995, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.

She was born in Raleigh, N.C., July 25, 1902. At an early age she moved to
Norfolk with her family. She was the oldest of 10 children born to James and
Nellie Rencher. She gave her heart to Christ at an early age and entered the
membership of Saint John's A.M.E. Church more than 50 years ago. Gaither was
educated in the Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington
High School. She later married Hilary Jones Sr. From that union was born one
son, Hilary Jones Jr. For many years she was employed at the Norfolk Naval Base.
When she retired from that job in 1967, she pursued her hobby, gardening, and
treasured the time she acquired by working in her yard.

A gentle, loving, quietly private person, Gaither will be missed by her
grandsons, Hilary H. Jones III of Virginia Beach, Del. Jerrauld Jones and Darryl
Jones, both of Norfolk; two great-granddaughters, Torri Jones and Morgin Jones,
and one great-grandson, Jerrauld Jones. She is also survived by a
daughter-in-law, Corrine Davis Jones, widow of Attorney Hilary H. Jones Jr.;
three granddaughters-in-law, Yvonne Jones, Lynn Simmons Jones and Renee Jones;
and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at noon today by the Rev. I.W. Knight in St.
John A.M.E. Church. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery . The body will be placed in
church at 11 a.m. and the family will assemble at 1476 Ludlow Drive, Virginia
Beach. Riddick Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
