Her funeral took place yesterday from the Bute Street A.M.E. Church. She was an old servant of the Todd family for nearly a century. The Norfolk Landmark, Tues, June 4, 1895 Norfolk’s oldest resident, so far as is known, died last night at 7 o’clock. The person who was laid claim to this distinction was none other than Penny Jones, colored, and her death which was occasioned by extreme old age, occurred at the Old Folk’s Home, No. 324 Bute Street, of which she had been an inmate about two years. For a number of years previous to her entrance into the Home, Penny lived in Scott Street, where she was provide with a residence and fed and clothed by friends, both white and colored. There is no positive evidence of her exact age, but from the best information obtainable it appears, that she was about 112 years of age at the time of her death. As an evidence of the above statement, Penny has a nephew who survives her and who it known to be 70 years old. This nephew remembers visiting her when as a boy, at which time his aunt had been very advanced in years. Penny had been a servant in the Todd Family, of this city for nearly a century.
