Henry Jones Dies During the Night Senior Member of Norfolk’s Board of Control and One of City’s Leading Men Was Gallant Confederate Served in Norfolk Artillery Blues and Had Been Prominent in Business Life Norfolk, Va. June 29-Mr. R. Henry Jones, senior member of the Board of Control, and one of Norfolk’s best known citizens, died at 12:30 o’clock this morning, following a stroke of apoplexy, earlier in the night. The news of Mr. Jones death came as a shock to his friends throughout the city, for although he had been complaining for several weeks. He returned to the city several days ago from Mecklenburg Springs, but was not improved. Last week he endeavored to do office work at the Board of Control, but had several sinking spells, and Friday afternoon was barely able, with the assistance of young men, to get on a trolley car and go home. He was a man of indomitable will and would not give up as long as he had the strength to go. Mr. Jones was sixty-four years of age and a native of Norfolk. He was the son of the late Jesse Jones. He is survived by two children, Percy R. Jones and Miss Grace Heath Jones, and three sisters, Mrs. George M. Walker, of Charles City County, Va.; Mrs. Martha J. Christian; of Norfolk, Miss Virginia Jones, of Norfolk, and one brother, George Jones, of Norfolk. Mr. Jones was a Confederate soldier, served with the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues, and was a member of Pickett-Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans. For a number of years he was the head of the wholesale feed company of Jesse Jones & Co., and was connected with it up to a few months ago when the business was closed out. Mr. Jones had served the city in a number of capacities, being a member of both branches of Council at various times, a member of the Board of Health, and for several years superintendent of the Norfolk City Waterworks. Two years ago Mr. Jones stood for the election for a member of the Board of Control, when the administration plan of the city was hanged under the new charter, was elected and drew the six years’ term. He took a great interest in the work of the administration board, and was at the head of the water department, health department and fire department. He was an indefatigable worker in the interest of the city as he saw it. Mr. Jones was a leading member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a member of its vestry board and also prominent in the Masonic Order, as a member of Ruth Lodge. He was also a member of the Royal Arcanum. Upon the announcement of the death of Mr. Jones this morning all of the city offices were closed, the city courts adjourned and flags were lowered to half- mast. For an hour the fire bells of the city tolled. The funeral is announced for Tuesday afternoon.
