James C. Jones, Tuesday night, August 19 at his residence on Staunton Ave., Piedmont Heights. He was confined to his bed thirteen months. Rev. Jones was the pioneer of organized labor among the colored longshoremen of this section. Several of the locals of the International Longshoremen’s Ass’n. turned out in a body to honor him at Zion Baptist Church last Sunday afternoon, when the funeral took place. Rev. E. E. Smith, pastor of the church, delivered a sermon on the life of the deceased. He was assisted by several ministers including Rev. Twine, who was baptized at the same Rev. Jones was 46 years ago. Condolences were read from John W. Barnes, Sewells Point Praying Band, Class 23 of Zion Baptist Church, Locals 1221 and 978 of the International Longshoremen’s Association. Remarks were made by George Millner, National Vice President of the longshoremen. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Jones and other relatives. His remains were interred in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
