Dr. Thacker, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church, last night conducted services over the remains of Mrs. Frances Joseph in the chapel of the union mission. The interment will be in Elmwood cemetery this morning. The casket, contributed by Undertaker Smith, was covered with beautiful flowers, donated by Florists Blick and Newton. The chief mourners were the daughters of Mrs. Joseph, Mrs. W. B. Myers and Mrs. C. H. Deekins. Mrs. Joseph's death was caused by alcoholism as the certificate made out by Dr. Shepherd shows. The case was one of the many sad ones that have come to the attention of the mission officials this winter. Superintendent Ashley was called to the house of the woman in East Main street Thursday night. He found her in a dying condition. The little room was used by the mother and daughters and the superintendent found poverty on all sides. The superintendent learned that Mrs. Joseph had been stricken with paralysis superinduced by the excessive use of alcohol. The daughters were too poor to secure medical attendance and when a physician was summoned it was too late; death had ended the sufferings of Mrs. Joseph. The body was removed to the mission. The daughters of the unfortunate woman disclaimed any knowledge of the use of liquor by their mother. They said that she was in the act of lighting a lamp when she fell forward with a stroke of paralysis. Mrs. Joseph was married but was divorced from her husband who, with a son, is living at Roanoke.
