Mr. Joyner was born in Woodland, N.C., on Aug. 6, 1900, and retired from the City of Norfolk 28 years ago, after 38 years of service with the Norfolk Fire Department. He came to Norfolk in 1918, where he worked for his father-in-law as a laundry truck driver. He was the widower of Mrs. Georgia Wise Joyner. He was the former president and treasurer of the Tidewater Senior Citizens Club, a member of the 60 Plus Club, and a former officer of the Norfolk Fire Department Credit Union. His church membership was at First Baptist Church of Norfolk for over 60 years. He was a member of the Mims Bible Class. Survivors include his sister, Eva Joyner of Norfolk; one daughter, Barbara Joyner Phields of Norfolk; his son-in-law, Clarence Alfred Phields of Norfolk; his two granddaughters, Brenda Phields Barrow of Norfolk, and Catherine Phields Lane of Richmond; his two grandsons-in-law, Willis Connely Barrow of Norfolk, and Edward A. Lane III of Richmond; his seven great-grandchildren, Gayle Barrow Burton of Norfolk, Monica R. Lane of Richmond, Edward A. Lane IV of Richmond, Joe C. Barrow of Norfolk, Ben C. Barrow of Norfolk, Sarah D. Lane of Richmond, and Leah E. Barrow of Norfolk; his great-grandson-in-law, Robert G. Burton of Norfolk; and his two great-great-grandchildren, Brian G. Burton, and Morgan R. Burton of Norfolk. He is also survived by his lifelong friend, Mrs. Nellie Dalby. Visitation will be at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Tidewater Drive on Wednesday, March 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral services will be conducted in the chapel at First Baptist Church of Norfolk at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31. Graveside services will follow at Elmwood Cemetery on Princess Anne Road in Norfolk. The family will gather on the day of the funeral at the home of Willis Connely and Brenda Barrow, 1311 Bayview Blvd., Norfolk. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Norfolk.
