A native of La Grange, N.C., he was the son of the late Allen Lee and Georgia Joyner. After moving to Norfolk, he worked at the Cavalier Hotel, and later became the proprietor at Capital Cleaners on Chapel Street in the Huntersville section of Norfolk. A member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Mr. Joyner is survived by his wife, Essie Mae Thompson Joyner; his son, William Murphy Joyner of Alexandria; his daughter, Ruth Lewis and her husband Theodore Sr.; one as a daughter, Evelena Nixon; his grandsons, the Rev. Theodore Lewis Jr., Elgin Lewis and his wife, Valerie, all of Norfolk, Darryl Lewis and his wife, Towanda, of Dumfries; and one as a grandson, Rodney Green of Virginia Beach; three great-grandchildren, Nicole and Desiree Lewis of Norfolk and Ivan Lewis of Dumfries. He is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Joyner and Lucille Bryant of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral was held Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 745 Park Ave., Norfolk with the Rev. Dr. John Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery . Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
