December 2023 Marie Bernadette (Kearns) Kane, RN, January 13, 1955 - December 16, 2023. Born in Philadelphia, PA to James J. & Theresa M. (Hughes) Kearns (deceased). Also, pre-deceased by Gerald L., Kathleen A., & Theresa M. Kane. Loving wife to Gerald L., devoted mother to Jerry & wife Alex, Sean P., & Brendan J. Doting Grandmom to Eli Gracen, Marie was waiting (mostly) patiently for the March birth of Magnolia Grace. Also survived by Kearns Family members, James (Kathleen), Patricia (John) Given, Eileen (William) Kosmaczewski, Michael (Tana), Theresa, Daniel (Julie), Thomas (Michele), 24 nieces & nephews and 20 great-nieces & - nephews and by Kane Family members, Patrick (Sandy), Kathleen, Jeffrey (Daniel), Eileen (Christopher), Fran (Kathleen), Sheila, 10 nieces & nephews and 3 great- nieces & -nephews with 2 more on the way, along with a multitude of friends, both old and new. You know who you are. Marie achieved an early life dream by graduating as a Registered Nurse from St. Agnes Medical Center’s School of Nursing in 1980. For the next 43 years, in Philadelphia & Virginia Beach, whether as Staff or an Agency Rotating Nurse in a number of hospitals, a cardiac rehab facility and Urgent Care Centers, her patients got her very best. But the crown jewel in her nursing career was the 15 years she spent as the School Nurse at St. John the Apostle Catholic School. Nurse Kane truly looked forward to each and every encounter with her students, whether at school, weekend Mass, or out in the community. Jerry joined Cub Scouts in VB in 1996. So did Marie. First as a Pack 179 Committee Member, then as a Den Leader for Sean, and a few years later, Brendan. When Jerry bridged to Troop 179, so did Marie. Committee Member, Merit Badge Counselor, Committee Secretary, Medical Resource, anything and everything needed, Marie would volunteer to help. She ended up getting involved in many District & Council events, staffing numerous Wood Badge, NYLT, Camp-O-Rees & Order of the Arrow events. When the boys started working at Pipsico Scout Reservation as Merit Badge Counselors and Kitchen Staff, Marie joined them as the Camp Medic for four summers. Although her sons aged out of Scouting, Marie never did. In fact, she was widely known throughout Tidewater Scouting as “Momma Kane” which started when Jerry’s friends were teenagers and continues today. Marie was a Scouter till the very end, her final health problem presented itself while she was assisting and mentoring at the OA’s Annual Holiday Banquet. The Family will receive friends at HD Oliver Funeral Home, Laskin Road Chapel, December 27th from 6 – 8 pm. Funeral Mass to be held December 28th at 11 am at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, followed by an internment at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. Scouts are requested to wear their uniform. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John the Apostle Catholic Church Capital Campaign, 1968 Sandbridge Rd, Virginia Beach Va, 23456 or Tidewater Council BSA, 1032 Heatherwood Dr, Virginia Beach, 23455.
