Oct. 1 —(AP)—Army Aviation Cadet Albert Edward Kaufmann, of Norfolk, Va., burned to death and Cadet Charles G. Kadel, of Memphis, Tenn., was critically burned in the mid-air collision of two training planes near Turner field late today. In a formation of 12 planes, preparing to land at the advanced air school, the two ships collided and burst into flames. Cadet Kadel bailed out and drifted down with his clothes afire. Kaufmann died in his burned ship. Col. John B. Patrick, commanding officer at Turner, said cause of the collision had not been determined. Kadel was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Tall, nice-looking and possessing a genial disposition, Al Kaufmann was very popular with his classmates at Maury High School and Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. Twenty-one years old, he was the son of Joseph and Mrs. Julia Muller Kaufmann, residing at 404 West Nineteenth street. He was born in Norfolk and a lifelong resident here. At Turner Field in Albany, Ga., he was an advanced cadet of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Young Kaufmann attended elementary school at Sacred Heart School and graduated from Maury High School. He attended Norfolk Division for two years and during the summers recently had been employed by Norfolk Newspapers, Inc., working usually in the advertising department. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the Delta Fraternity. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters, Miss Margaret Kaufmann, of New York, and Miss Barbara A. Kaufmann, of Norfolk, and three brothers, Herman J. Kaufmann, of Camp Polk, La; Julian F. Kaufmann, of Norfolk, and Paul R. Kaufmann, of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Remains will be brought to Norfolk for funeral services and burial, the time and place to be announced later. KAUFMANN ALBERT EDWARD - At Albany, Ga., Wednesday, October 1, 1941, ALBERT EDWARD, son of Joseph and Mrs. Julia Muller Kaufmann, in the 22nd year of his age. Remains will be taken from the residence, No. 404 West Nineteenth street, Norfolk, Va., to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for funeral services MONDAY MORNING at 10 o’clock.
